Just back from 17 days in the gorgeous (and challenging!) Adirondacks! We spent a week backpacking the High Peaks region and a second week canoeing and camping on Cranberry Lake.
Backpacking in the High Peaks included summitting Mt. Marcy, the tallest of the 46 and the highest point in the state of New York. Trails were steep, piles of boulders—vertical in some places! But the toughest trails lead to the best views. Icy cold brooks soothed our battered feet at the end of each day.
We launched our canoes from the tiny village of Wanakena on the south end of Cranberry Lake and paddled to Joe Indian Island to set up our base camp. From there we paddled out each day to explore the island and nearby inlets, returning to home base for evening swimming and gorgeous sunsets, followed by campfires and music.

We rested for a few days between the backpacking and canoe trips in the small town of Westport on the shores of Lake Champlain. Our good friends, the Robinsons, hosted us for those days, and made us feel part of their family and the community of Westport. They also provided a feast for us upon our hungry return from the High Peaks.
We’ll be back!
